Travel Guide
A practical guide to dates, hotels, transport and sightseeing for groups visiting London for the first time.
London rewards good planning. With so much to see, and with traffic and coach rules that differ from many other cities, a little preparation makes the trip smoother for everyone.
Hotel availability, vehicle size and attraction tickets all depend on how many people are travelling and when. School holidays, summer weekends and major events fill quickly, so confirm these two details as early as you can.
Some central streets are narrow or have restrictions on where coaches can stop. When choosing hotels, ask whether there is a safe place nearby for a coach or minibus to set down and collect your group.
Plan each day around one or two neighbourhoods. Westminster and Buckingham Palace fit naturally together, as do the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and the South Bank. Museums in South Kensington sit side by side.
Coaches cannot stop directly outside every attraction. Central London also has the Congestion Charge and the Ultra Low Emission Zone. A transport partner who knows the city will plan legal drop-off points and factor these into the quote.
Many popular attractions use timed entry, and group bookings often need to be made in advance. Build your daily plan around those times.
London traffic varies by time of day. Allow breathing space between stops, and include free time so your group can enjoy the city at its own pace.
